Data Centre Technician
A data centre technician is responsible for maintaining and ensuring the smooth operation of data centre hardware and software systems.
Main Responsibilities
- Install and Configure Hardware and Software: Set up servers, networking equipment, and other data centre infrastructure components.
- Monitor System Performance: Continuously observe system metrics to ensure optimal operation and identify potential issues.
- Perform Routine Maintenance: Conduct regular checks and maintenance tasks to ensure the reliability and efficiency of data centre systems.
- Troubleshoot Technical Issues: Diagnose and resolve hardware and software problems to minimise downtime and service disruptions.
- Manage Backups and Data Recovery: Oversee backup operations and implement data recovery procedures to protect against data loss.
- Ensure Physical Security: Maintain security protocols to protect data centre facilities and equipment from unauthorised access and physical threats.
- Support Network Infrastructure: Assist in the maintenance and optimisation of network connectivity within the data centre.
- Maintain Cleanliness and Organisation: Keep the data centre environment clean and well-organised to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Document Procedures and Changes: Record details of installations, configurations, maintenance activities, and troubleshooting efforts for future reference.
- Collaborate with IT Teams: Work closely with other IT professionals to support overall data centre operations and address any issues that arise.
Skills and Experience
- Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of server hardware, networking equipment, and data centre infrastructure.
- Troubleshooting Skills: Ability to diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues quickly and effectively.
- Network Knowledge: Familiarity with network protocols, switches, routers, and connectivity solutions.
- System Monitoring: Experience with monitoring tools and techniques to ensure optimal system performance.
- Maintenance Expertise: Ability to perform routine maintenance and updates on data centre equipment.
- Security Awareness: Understanding of physical and cybersecurity best practices to protect data centre assets.
- Data Management: Experience with backup operations and data recovery procedures.
- Organisational Skills: Ability to maintain a clean, organised, and efficient data centre environment.
- Documentation Abilities: Proficiency in documenting procedures, configurations, and troubleshooting steps.
- Collaboration Skills: Ability to work effectively with IT teams and other stakeholders.
- Physical Stamina: Capability to handle physical tasks such as installing equipment and managing cables.

Personal Specification
