In the ever-evolving world of data centres and sustainability, it's crucial to dispel some common myths that can cast a shadow on the industry. At Lunar Digital, we're determined to be at the forefront of sustainability within this sector, and as part of this dispel some common misconceptions about data centre sustainability and shine a light on our commitment to climate positivity.

Myth 1: It’s too expensive to be green

Reality: Thanks to tax incentives and the decreasing cost of renewable energy, being green is not only affordable but also cost-effective for data centres. At Lunar Digital, we are actively pursuing renewable energy sources, optimising our cooling systems, and achieving sustainability accreditations.

Myth 2: Cooling data centres reduces water supply for household use

Reality: While effective cooling systems are vital for data centres, the water used is often sourced sustainably, separate from household supply. Many data centres employ 'closed loop' chilled water systems, ensuring minimal water usage over their 15+ year lifespan. Our industry is highly efficient in water use.

Myth 3: The industry is power hungry and energy intensive

Reality: Data centres do require significant power, but they've made remarkable strides in environmental sustainability. Many use renewable energy sources and focus on energy-efficient operations. LED lighting and occupancy sensors help reduce energy consumption, leading to cost savings and fewer carbon emissions.

Myth 4: Providers are driving progress in sustainability initiatives

Reality: The data centre industry is actively pushing for sustainability. Although data storage and transmission consume energy, this share hasn't significantly increased in over a decade, despite rising internet use. Tech giants and data centre providers are leading the charge in green initiatives.

Lunar Digital’s commitment to sustainability

At the heart of our corporate responsibility is a commitment to a climate strategy that is not only carbon neutral but climate positive. Lunar Digital take their ESG (Environmental and Social Governance) commitments very seriously.

Major IT companies are taking responsibility for the energy impacts of data centres through energy efficient design. Staying at the forefront of energy efficiency is the only way to keep costs down while maintaining reliability. There are many opportunities available for system improvement and significant energy savings.

Modern data centres are continuously striving for greater efficiency and scalability while delivering increased performance and security. As designers of cutting-edge server CPUs and GPUs, we recognise our important role in addressing these critical priorities. We are focused on accelerating server energy efficiency, lowering data centre total cost of ownership (TCO) and delivering high-performance computing (HPC) to help tackle some of the world’s toughest challenges.

As we work towards a more sustainable digital future, it's essential to confront these myths and promote the truth about data centre sustainability. We want to educate and inspire positive change, shedding light on the remarkable progress within our industry.
